can kids use bolt or lovable?
Updated
Not on their own accounts. Bolt's terms say users must be at least 18, and Lovable's terms say 18, or under 18 only with a parent's permission. ChatGPT's terms set 13 as the minimum. Launch is the AI coding platform built for kids ages 5–13, built around COPPA and FERPA, and free to start.
What Bolt and Lovable do well
Bolt and Lovable are impressive. You chat with an AI and it builds a website or web app. Both let you see the code behind your project: Bolt has a Code view for opening and editing files, and Lovable says your projects are backed by editable code you own and can sync to GitHub.
They are built for grown-ups. Bolt describes itself as a way to build custom apps for your business. Lovable says its services are intended for adults. That is the right design for their customers. It is not a design for children.
What their terms say about age
Bolt is run by StackBlitz. Its terms say you must be at least 18 to use the services, and its children's privacy policy says the services are not directed to, and may not be used by, anyone under 18.
Lovable's terms say you must be at least 18, or the age of majority where you live, and that anyone under 18 needs a parent or legal guardian's permission. Its privacy policy says you must be 18 or older to create your own account, and it allows organizations such as schools to give supervised access under a written agreement.
ChatGPT is a chatbot, not an app builder, but kids ask it for code too. OpenAI's terms require users to be at least 13, and users under 18 need a parent or legal guardian's permission.
Data handling and COPPA
COPPA is the US law that sets requirements for online services directed to children under 13, or that know they are collecting personal information from a child under 13. Bolt and Lovable handle this by setting adult minimum ages: they are not built to be used by children.
What happens to what you type matters too. Lovable's privacy policy says it uses customer content and usage data, which may include personal data, to train and improve its AI models, with an opt-out in account settings. For a kid, that is exactly the kind of setting a parent should not have to remember.
What Launch adds for kids
Launch is built for kids ages 5–13 from the start. Kids log in with a code: no email and no social feed. Launch replaces kids' stored names, and any email addresses, before their code and messages reach the coding AI. Kids' typed messages to the AI are scrubbed for personal details, and explanations are pitched to the kid's age. There are no ads, no data sales and no tracking. Launch is built around COPPA and FERPA.
For teachers and schools, Launch has a teacher dashboard to manage students and track progress, and school plans billed per organization.
Kids still get the part that makes Bolt and Lovable exciting: describe an app, watch it get built, and change it. On Launch the code is real HTML, CSS, JavaScript and React, and the AI pitches its explanations to the kid's age.
